Saptpadi ( vedic ritual)
The day started very early at 5am. The auspicious hour to be married was at 6am and we were all warned that this has to be followed in order for the couple to be properly blessed by the stars positions etc. So, bride and groom and the parents were there promptly , we were given a littl grace period but we got there around 7am. I missed many fun rituals by being late but they were waiting for us to do the KAnya Dan along with her parents. This is a biggest good deed you can do to book a clear passage to the heavens ( to get a daughter married ) So, I guess we have done two by now...two tickets ot the heavens for me :). After that there were many more rituals and the last one was the Saptpadi , where you do around the fire seven times , promising seven things ( all in Sanskrit) . In Vedic society fire had great religious importance and it is considered as all purifying and powerful force of nature ( cann ot argue with it ) .
Jagdish's friend showed up and I asked if we can do some sight seeing. We quickly disappeared for few hours ( changed into normal clothes) and went ot see Bheda Ghat and just around the twon. He managed to get lost but we made it to the beautiful Bheda Ghat. It is where the holy river Narmada goes through the marble canyon and makes water falls. Like all other natural places in India, this has a temple as well as lots of vendors selling Shiv Lings ( these are found in Narmada only, check Wiki if you want ot know more about Shiv lings) . The thing to do is the boat ride at night through the marble canyon, but we did not have time and came back for the wedding reception. I was planning to change into Sari but was given "permission" by elders to stay in my street clothes ...yeh..
The eldest of al lthe Iyers is an interesting person, 83 years old and very funny. He also turned out to be a fellow worker of Jagdish;s friend ( for 30 years) . He decided that I am his daughter and gave me 500 rs to buy something :) I told him I could not buy anything because it was not enough...:)
It was a fun day and the wedding went very smoothly and the new family seems nice , I better sleep now because JAgdis his getting disturbed. ...good night saroj
